Beetroot (Red and Golden)

Prefers full sun to part sun.

Keep soil evenly moist and avoid letting it dry out.

Plant into rich, fertile, well-draining soil and fertilise every 4-6 weeks during active growth. 8- 10 cm recommended spacing between seedlings.

Harvest when the roots reach the desired size (usually 6-8weeks for baby beets, 8-12 weeks for larger).

Leaves are also edible.

Broad Beans

Prefer full sun.

Plant into fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Plant 35- 30 cm apart.

Water regularly whilst establishing and during the flowering/pod formation.

Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. They can benefit from support, such as stakes with string/mesh, as they can get heavy once they’ve begun podding.

Harvest the pods when they’re plump yet still tender (harvest younger beans earlier if preferred, or for larger beans, let the pods fill out).

The young tips are also edible.

Kale (red and green)

Prefers full sun (however some afternoon shade during hot periods is beneficial).

Plant into rich, fertile and well-drained soil with plenty of compost mixed through.

Keep soil moist , especially whilst the plants are young and establishing.

Can benefit from a layer of mulch to retail soil moisture.

Kale is quite a hungry crop so will benefit from a balanced vegetable feeder or compost every 3-4 weeks.

For baby kale, space 10- 15 cm apart; for full-sized plants, space 40- 50 cm apart. Harvest the outer leaves once large enough, as needed, while leaving the inner leaves to keep producing (this will give you a longer harvest).

Kohlrabi

Prefers full sun.

Water consistently to keep soil moist, especially whilst the bulb is forming (irregular watering can lead to tough or split bulbs).

Plant into fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of compost/organic matter.

For baby kohlrabi, plant 15- 20 cm apart; for full-sized kohlrabi, plant 30- 40 cm apart.

The bulb will grow above the soil line, so ensure not to mound soil over the top of it.

Harvest when the bulb swells to 7- 10 cm for tender, sweet kohlrabi (avoid leaving it to get too long, as they can then become woody).

Leaves are also edible.

Tip - Keep an eye out for white butterfly cabbage caterpillars, slugs, snails and aphids and protect as necessary.

Leek

Prefers full sun.

Plant into deep, fertile, well drained soil with plenty of compost.

Leeks appreciate loose soil so they can develop long white stems. Keep soil consistently moist, particularly during warmer weather and don’t let them dry out.

Can benefit from a feed of fertiliser every 3-4 weeks during active growth.

For baby leeks space 7-10cm apart, and for larger leeks plant 1015cm apart (with 30cm between rows if using).

Harvest when 2- 3 cm thick for baby/tender leeks, 4-5cm for ideal kitchen leeks, or 5-7cm for larger mature leeks.

Tip - as the leek grows, gradually mound the soil around its base and/or mulch to cover the lower stem to help ‘blanche’, to create a longer, tender white section (whilst avoiding getting any into the leaves).

Lettuce

Prefers part to full sun (protect from harsh hot afternoon sun).

Keep soil moist, and avoid letting it dry out completely.

Plant into rich, fertile soil with plenty of organic matter and good drainage.

Space 10- 15 cm for baby leaves/salad mix or 20- 30 cm apart for full-headed lettuces such as cos or butterhead varieties.

Harvest by picking outer leaves as needed, or harvest when the whole head is mature.

Tip - Watch out for slugs, snails, aphids and caterpillars and protect young plants where necessary.

Oregano

Prefers full sun with free-draining soil as it doesn’t like wet roots.

Give a light fertilise feed in spring (doesn’t need much). Plant 25- 40 cm apart (known to spread).

Regularly pinch the stems to create a bushier plant.

Harvest as needed.

Parsley

Prefers part sun to full sun (protect from very hot afternoon sun).

Keep soil moist (don’t let it dry out completely).

Plant into a rich, fertile, well-draining soil and give it a light feed of fertiliser every 4-6 weeks.

Plant 20-25cm apart.

Harvest the outer leaves and stems regularly to promote new growth.

Rainbow Chard

Prefers part sun to full sun.

Keep soil moist and/or water when the surface feels dry.

Plant into rich, fertile, well-draining soil and fertilise every 4-6 weeks during active growth. Plant 30-40cm apart.

Harvest by picking the outer leaves first and leaving the smaller inner leaves to mature.

Regular harvesting will encourage new growth.

Silverbeet (Swiss Chard)

Prefers part sun to full sun.

Keep soil moist and/or water when the surface feels dry.

Plant into rich, fertile, well-draining soil and fertilise every 4-6 weeks during active growth.

Plant 30- 40 cm apart.

Harvest by picking the outer leaves first and leaving the smaller inner leaves to mature.

Regular harvesting will encourage new growth.

Spring onions

Prefers full sun but can tolerate some light shade.

Plant into loose, fertile and well-drained soil with some compost mixed through well.  keep soil consistently moist and ensure not to let them dry out.

Can benefit from a light feed of fertiliser or compost every 3-4 weeks.

Space 5-10cm between plants for larger spring oinions, otherwise for smallewr bunching onions 3-5cm apart.

Harvest when stems appear approximately pencil thickness, or earlier if you prefer smaller, tender onions.

Either pull the entire plant out of cut the green tops and allow the plant to re-grow.

Strawberries (Fresca)

Prefers Full sun for best fruit production.

Plant into well-draining, slightly acidic soil with some aged compost.

Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during hot and dry periods (avoid waterlogging and watering overhead to prevent rot).

Consider using a layer of mulch around the plant to help retain moisture and weed suppression, and to also protect the fruit from coming into contact with soil to reduce fruit rot risk.

Space approximately 30cm apart. Can benefit from a liquid feed of a high potassium liquid fertilser (such as a liquid potash or seaweed based fruit fertiliser) every 2 weeks during growing season (spring - autumn).

Suitable for pots, hanging baskets, gardens and planter boxes.

Produces luscious, firm and bright red berries with a classic sweet flavour throughout summer to autumn.
